Food Wrapping & Baking Paper Converting Problems? Start With the Issue
Each issue below follows the same three steps: what to check first on your line, the possible response route, and what to send us. Work through a card to turn a symptom into a concrete material action.
01
See the symptom
Start from how the finished cup behaves — leakage, softness, curl, cracking, unstable running or print issues.
02
Check process before changing paper
Machine parameters, storage and conditioning can also be the cause.
03
Review the material structure
Then look at GSM, bulk / caliper, MD/CD stiffness, moisture, coating structure and roll / sheet specification.
04
Change the smallest effective variable
Change one likely factor at a time — not GSM, coating and machine settings all at once.
05
Run a controlled machine trial
Validate on the real machine, real cup and real application — and record the results.
06
Lock the approved specification
Confirm the final grade / coating / format / tolerances, and use the approved standard for repeat orders.
Common Converting Issues & Our Response Routes
Grease Penetration & Insufficient Grease Resistance
Oil migrates through the wrap and stains the packaging for burgers, sandwiches, fried foods, and bakery products.
What to check first
- Food oil / grease level and how long the wrap holds the food
- Grease-resistance level (Kit) of the current grade
- Where the stain appears: wrap surface or outer package
- Serving temperature after wrapping
Possible response route
- Match the grease-resistance level to the actual food application
- Compare the current grade / TDS before changing GSM
- Review the Kit level against contact time and oil load
- Run a sample test with your actual food before bulk production
What to send us
- Current paper grade, GSM and size
- Food type and contact conditions
- Photo of the stained or failed wrap
- Roll or sheet format
Food Sticking & Poor Release Performance
Food sticks to the paper after baking, cooking, or food preparation instead of releasing cleanly.
What to check first
- Whether the current grade is silicone-coated or uncoated
- Coating side: single- or double-sided silicone vs food-contact surface
- Cooking temperature and duration
- Food type: batter, dough, or sticky / fatty fillings
Possible response route
- Move to silicone-coated parchment paper for non-stick release
- Confirm the coating side matches the food-contact surface
- Match the grade to the baking or cooking process
- Test release performance on a sample before switching
What to send us
- Application: baking, cooking, or food preparation
- Temperature and duration
- Current paper sample or specification
- Roll or sheet format
Heat Resistance & Baking Performance
Paper browns, breaks down, or loses performance under oven or air fryer conditions — wrapping paper and baking paper do not serve the same purpose.
What to check first
- Oven / air fryer temperature vs the current paper’s rating
- Continuous exposure time, not only peak temperature
- Whether the grade is designed for oven use at all
- Direct food contact vs liner use
Possible response route
- Use silicone-coated parchment paper for oven applications — designed for baking and withstands up to 230°C
- Match the grade to baking, roasting, or steaming
- Confirm heat resistance across the full baking cycle
- Run a sample under your actual baking curve
What to send us
- Oven / air fryer temperature and duration
- Food type being baked or heated
- Current specification if replacing a grade
- Roll or sheet format and size
Curling, Folding & Converting Issues
Paper curls, cracks, or folds poorly during slitting, cutting, folding, and forming — affecting production efficiency.
What to check first
- Which step shows the issue: slitting, cutting, folding, or forming
- Finished format vs current roll width / sheet size
- Whether the grade was selected on GSM alone
- Line moisture and storage conditions
Possible response route
- Select the material according to the finished format and converting process, not GSM alone
- Review roll width and sheet size against the converting equipment
- Compare the current grade / TDS before changing specification
- Request customized jumbo roll or sheet formats
What to send us
- Converting process and finished format
- Current roll width / sheet size
- Photo or video of the curl or crack
- Machine requirements
Machine Running Performance & High Converting Loss
A grade that performs well in one application may not automatically run on another production line — converting waste stays high.
What to check first
- Roll width, core, OD, and sheet size vs your equipment
- Material structure vs the intended converting process
- Where the waste occurs: feeding, printing, or forming
- Whether samples or machine trials were run before bulk
Possible response route
- Confirm machine compatibility before ordering
- Run samples and machine trials before bulk production
- Match the specification to your actual line, not to another application’s result
- Compare the current grade / TDS before changing
What to send us
- Machine model and line speed
- Roll width, core, OD, or sheet size
- Waste rate and where it occurs
- Current paper specification
Printability, Ink Adhesion & Surface Quality
Branded food wrapping prints unclearly or ink fails to adhere — surface quality directly affects the final printed appearance.
What to check first
- Surface smoothness of the current grade
- Printing process: flexographic or offset
- Ink adhesion on the current surface
- Whether the grade matches the intended printing and converting process
Possible response route
- Use greaseproof paper that supports flexographic and offset printing
- Consider MG / MF paper where a smooth printable surface is required
- Match surface quality to the printing and converting process
- Run a print test on a sample before bulk production
What to send us
- Printing process and ink system
- Artwork or brand requirements
- Photo of the print defect on the current grade
- Roll or sheet format
Send Us the Failed Wrap or Sticking Sheet — Not Just the GSM
A sample of the issue usually reveals more than a written specification ever will. Share the failed wrap, stuck sheet, or curled edge with your enquiry and we can review a suitable response route.

Find the Right Material for Your Production
Which direction should you select from? Match your application to the requirement set below — specific paper grades and formats are covered in the next section.
For Food Wrapping
Start with the food’s oil, grease, moisture, temperature, and handling requirements. The right selection depends on the actual food and converting format rather than paper weight alone.
For Baking Applications
Prioritize heat resistance, non-stick performance, and food-contact suitability — the paper needs to remain stable during heating and allow food to release cleanly.
For Liner & Interleaving Applications
Consider how the paper separates food items, protects the surrounding packaging, and handles oil or grease. Match the material to the food type, contact conditions, and final format before converting.
For Further Converting
Begin with your production requirements: roll width, sheet size, converting method, and machine compatibility. Sure Paper supports customized sizes and supply formats for converters.
Decision roles
What Matters to Your Team
The same roll is evaluated differently by procurement, production, and QA. Aligning the three views helps turn a specification into a repeatable supply — this section is about decision roles, not about the converting issues already covered above.

Same GSM, Different Wrapping Performance
The same GSM does not automatically mean the same packaging performance. Paper structure, grease resistance, coating, surface properties, and intended application can all affect how the material behaves. Buyers should compare the complete specification rather than using GSM as the only selection criterion.
| Parameter | What it actually tells you |
|---|---|
| GSM | Basis weight only. It cannot by itself represent stiffness, thickness or forming performance — same GSM from two mills is not the same cup. |
| Bulk / caliper | At the same GSM, higher bulk generally gives more caliper (A thicker sheet). Final performance still depends on fiber, MD/CD stiffness, moisture, coating and cup geometry — bulk 1.7 is not automatically better than 1.4 or 1.5. |
| MD/CD stiffness | Directionality affects cup body strength, forming, printing and converting. A single “good stiffness” claim is not A specification. |
| Moisture / Cobb | Drives dimensional stability, coating behavior, forming and edge behavior. Leakage is rarely explained by the base paper alone. |

Food Wrapping & Baking Paper Sourcing — the 5 Questions That Matter
Practical procurement questions — what to send, what we can supply, and how MOQ / samples / lead time are confirmed. Material differences are not re-explained here.
Can you match the Food Wrapping & Baking Paper grade we currently use?
Yes. Send your current paper specification, sample, GSM, size, application, and converting requirements for review. This gives our team a practical starting point for evaluating a suitable replacement or supply option.
How should we choose between Greaseproof Paper, Wax Paper and Parchment Paper?
For a sourcing decision, tell us the food type, temperature, and roll or sheet format you need — our team will recommend a grade rather than ask you to compare the whole catalogue. If you prefer to shortlist first, the Material Decision Table above follows the same logic in one view.
Can you supply both Greaseproof Paper and PE Coated MG Paper?
Yes. Sure Paper supplies greaseproof paper for food wrapping and fast-food applications, and PE coated MG/MF paper for food packaging applications requiring a printable and heat-sealable structure. Roll and sheet formats are supported, including customized widths, lengths, and packaging arrangements according to the selected material and production requirements.
